Our Bi-Weekly Safe Space Sessions are designed to offer Black male college students a reliable and welcoming environment to express themselves. These sessions take place every other week and are structured to encourage openness, peer connection, and thoughtful reflection. Each gathering is an opportunity for students to discuss topics that directly impact their daily lives, such as identity, academic pressure, mental health challenges, and relationships. Participants are encouraged to speak freely, without fear of judgment, in a space that values honesty and care.
Every session brings together three groups: younger students in their first or second year, peer mentors who serve as older student guides, and licensed mental health professionals who facilitate the dialogue. The sessions are structured but allow for natural conversation, offering a rhythm that feels familiar and safe. Through this model, we build a community rooted in mutual respect and shared growth. Participants often discover that their struggles are more common than they imagined, and through this realization, a sense of belonging takes root. These sessions do not attempt to provide a complete solution to every mental health concern, but they serve as a vital beginning.
By consistently showing up for one another, students build emotional strength and a habit of openness. They begin to consider professional mental health services not as a last resort, but as part of a healthy life. In many cases, students report feeling less isolated after just a few sessions. These conversations help shift the perception of vulnerability into something that is both natural and necessary. As each semester passes, the group evolves, but the foundation remains: connection, listening, and growth. For many, it becomes a core part of their college experience—something they look forward to and rely on. And as students move forward in their academic journey, they carry with them the skills and confidence to support not only themselves but also those around them.
Whether you're a student, partner, or supporter, we’d love to hear from you.
